Not every underground water line problem requires full replacement.
At On-Time Plumbing, we diagnose the condition of the line first to determine whether targeted repair, trenchless repair, or replacement is the most reliable long-term solution.
Main Water Line Repair
The main water line runs underground from the municipal connection to the property — when it fails, the entire building loses a reliable water supply.
Our team uses underground leak detection equipment to locate the failure accurately, then performs main water line and water main repair at the confirmed point.
Signs the main line needs attention:
Main Water Line Replacement
When the existing line can no longer maintain reliable pressure or structural integrity across its full length, removing and replacing it entirely eliminates the recurring failure cycle.
During water line replacement, our team excavates to the damaged line, installs updated underground piping matched to the property’s water supply requirements, establishes proper grading and alignment, and pressure tests the full line before backfill and site restoration.
Some properties make traditional excavation impractical — established landscaping, concrete driveways, and hardscaping all sit directly above the damaged line.
Trenchless water line repair works through limited access points, using camera inspection to confirm pipe condition, then directional boring or pipe bursting to restore the line with the surface largely intact.
Trenchless Water Line Replacement
Where the existing pipe path runs beneath established landscaping, driveways, or hardscaping, trenchless replacement installs a new water line without opening a continuous trench across the property.
Our team inspects the underground routing and pipe condition first, then uses directional boring or pipe pulling to draw new piping into position through limited access points.
The surface stays largely intact while the line beneath it is completely renewed.
When interior supply lines show the same deterioration as the underground system, we evaluate whether repiping is warranted before the new line goes in
Not every underground failure means replacing the full system. When damage is isolated — a cracked section, a corroded fitting, a separated joint — targeted repair restores the line without disturbing what is still performing.
Our team removes the failed section, installs materials matched to the existing pipe, and pressure tests the repaired line before the ground is closed.
Supply line failures cut water pressure. Drain pipe failures do the opposite — wastewater backs up, drains slow, odors develop, and standing water appears around the property.
The repair starts with a camera inspection to locate the cracked, separated, or root-damaged section inside the drain line, then targets that specific area without disturbing the surrounding system.
When the camera confirms the pipe is intact but restricted by buildup, drain cleaning restores flow without requiring repair.
Different underground piping materials fail differently, which affects how repairs, replacements, and trenchless methods should be handled.
Flexible piping material commonly used in newer installations and replacements because it handles movement and freeze conditions better than rigid piping.
Durable water line material known for long-term reliability, though older copper systems can eventually develop pinhole leaks and corrosion wear underground.
Common for underground water distribution because of its corrosion resistance and long service life when properly installed.
Designed to handle higher temperatures and pressure conditions while maintaining strong chemical and corrosion resistance.
Common in older underground drain and sewer systems, where corrosion, scaling, and cracking develop gradually over time — deterioration at this stage often requires sewer line repair to restore the line.
Lightweight drain piping material often used in drainage and vent systems because of its impact resistance and underground durability.
Older piping material prone to internal corrosion, pressure restriction, and long-term deterioration as buildup develops inside the pipe walls.

I was selling my house in Tennessee and the buyers agent hired Scott's Septic Tank Service to inspect the mainline and septic tank. Scott's told the agent that there was tree root intrusion in the mainline as it discharged into the septic tank and they took a cell phone photo of the "root intrusion." I personally opened the septic tank and found it to be hair that was sticking to the edge of the mainline. My agent then contacted Scott's to ask for video proof if the mainline had a camera run down it. They adamantly said it was tree roots and no video was taken. They estimated the cost, to rip us off, to seal the mainline from future "root intrusion" at $1400 on an eight year old house with no trees nearby. I called LEY Plumbing scheduled the next day for them to run a camera. They showed up earlier than scheduled and confirmed NO ROOT INTRUSION. The crew was very professional and courteous. We highly recommend them for service because they are honest. The photo was taken by Scott's Septic Tank Service.Posted on Google![]()

Underground water line problems rarely improve on their own. What starts as a pressure issue or small underground leak can eventually lead to property damage, water service interruptions, and larger excavation costs if the line continues deteriorating beneath the surface.
On-Time Plumbing provides water line repair and water line replacement in Shelbyville, TN, with organized diagnostics, trenchless solutions when appropriate, and underground repair methods focused on long-term system reliability for homes and businesses across Middle Tennessee.
